Background
The Department was established relatively recently, in 1987, when it was formed as an independent department within the Faculty of Arts. The establishing of the department was in the domain of Professor Branko Berčič. He studied Slavic languages at the Faculty of Arts and for several years worked at the research centre of National and University Library.
Prior to 1987 a Chair for Librarianship functioned at the Faculty of Education. After the new department was established, the number of students increased annually, and as a result, so did the academic staff. The effort of the professors and students also resulted with the opening of postgraduate studies, which was previously possible through a collaboration with the Department of Sociology.
Publications
The Department occasionally publishes the series Bibliothecaria. Some of the publications are available on the Department's website, also the ILFA (International Federation of Library Associations) principles on care and handling the library material.
In 2007 a special edition of the Jubilee Journal dedicated to the 20th Anniversary of the Department and to the 80th birthday of Branko Berčič was published. The journal is available online at the DLib.si - Digital Library of Slovenia.
International cooperation and student exchange
In recent years the Department was active in reorganising according to the new Bologna system. It is also active in the international context and ERASMUS/SOCRATES student exchange. So far, the partner universities for student exchange include the universities in Leipzig (Hochschule für Technik, Wirtschaft und Kultur Leipzig), Boras (Swedish School of Library and Information Science), Prague (Charles University), London (City University), Graz (Karl-Franzens-Universitaet), Valencia (Universidad Politecnica de Valencia), Udine (Universita degli Studi di Udine), Oxford (Oxford Brooks University), Vilnius (VILNIAUS Universitetas) and Bratislava (Comenius University in Bratislava).
